A long time ago, in October 1998, I decided I would like to learn how to
make a Web site. I chose to make a site dedicated to JAG because it was my
favourite show at the time. Since I was an absolute newbie when it came to
the Internet, a simple text site was my only option. I
was literally thumbing through Creating Web Pages for Dummies in search
of the HTML codes as I laboriously typed up each page. Thus was born
Full Review, a site where I and other JAG fans could voice our diverse opinions
on our favourite show. It was almost another year before I learned how to
make video screen captures, adding pictures from each episode to illustrate
the reviews.
I ended my brief stint as a self-appointed reviewer of JAG part way through
Season Four (April 1999). That was when I stopped watching JAG. Why? Because
I no longer enjoyed it. However, I kept this site online and continued to
post other fans' reviews and opinions as my contribution to JAG fandom. Why?
The show had given me a lot of pleasure in its early seasons, so I wanted
to give something back by providing a forum for fans to give voice without
having to worry about flames. Contributors to Full Review could use whatever
nom de plume they preferred. Their privacy was totally assured.
Full Review welcomed many different opinions on all aspects of the show.
Because of this, the site has always been a target for flames. JAG fans regularly
sent flames to me in response to contributors' opinions that they disagreed with. But there
were also other fans who contributed thoughtful dissertations. By late 1999,
my Web site was achieving its objective as a place where fans could safely
share their opinions. In addition to reviews of each JAG episode, Full
Review had articles on all things JAG - the characters, the story arcs, the
relationships, the good, the bad and the ugly. And visitors came, first by
the hundreds, then by the thousands. Site traffic increased by leaps and bounds.
Bandwidth usage skyrocketed. It was starting to become an expensive hobby.
I was proud of the site's success, but I was also starting to question why
I continued to maintain it when I no longer watched the show. Meanwhile, the
JAG seasons passed and my Full Review site continued to grow.
On May 31, 2002, I posted an article explaining why I no longer watched JAG
yet continued to keep this JAG Web site online. I was inundated by invective-laden
flames telling me to get out of JAG fandom and to take my JAG Web site with
me. Flames are nothing new to me, but this latest spate caused me to re-examine
my reasons for maintaining this site. When I was building Full Review, I was
always asking myself, "How do I do this?" The question now became "Why
am I doing this?" There didn't seem to be any good reason. Sadly, I decided
the time had come to close Full Review. On June 5, 2002, Full Review was no
more.
Since then, I've received hundreds of e-mails from all over the world, from
shocked and disappointed JAG fans. They tell me that they relied on Full Review.
They used it many times a week, some even daily, to keep track of the episodes,
to get themselves up to speed on the storylines and the back stories, and most of all, they liked the diversity of viewpoints. Yes, my visitors liked to know what fellow fans think of JAG episodes. Some
even tell me it's their favourite JAG site. <blush>. It was gratifying,
but it also generated in me a great sense of guilt. Yes, there were many that
pleaded for Full Review's return and argued that while they understood my
decision to close the site, it wasn't fair to punish the many who loved the
site for the flames of the few. To these JAG fans, I can only bow my head
and say, "I'm truly sorry. My decision is final. I have come to the end of
my road with JAG fandom. It's time for me to go and do other things with my
spare time."
I thank all the JAG fans that have contributed to Full Review. To my visitors
from all over the world: it's been an adventure. THANK YOU!
Shirley Hello, you've come to what was Full Review, an unofficial JAG fan
reviews site maintained by Shirley. Full Review was a forum for diverse opinions
and viewpoints on the TV show, JAG. The site is no longer available. I took
it offline on June 5, 2002. This short history of Full Review is its obituary.
June 19, 2002.
